Underkeep is my favorite old-school dungeon crawler since Legend of Grimrock, and yes that includes Queen’s Domain
Underkeep launched on Steam on 5 November, and the reviewer says it is their favourite old-school dungeon crawler since Legend of Grimrock. They prefer it to Queen’s Domain, praising its early 1990s-inspired design while finding that it offers enough exploration and depth to feel like more than a nostalgic imitation.
After about four hours, the reviewer had explored several linked dungeons and a larger-than-expected overworld, but had not yet reached the titular village. The game streamlines classic RPG conventions with a shared inventory, detailed automapping and automatic tool use, while making combat fully turn-based. Its familiar classes can be paired with unusual races such as stoneborn, raven and slugman, with no restrictions on combinations.
In short
- Underkeep launched on Steam on 5 November.
- Its grid-based exploration recalls classic early 1990s RPGs.
- Turn-based combat and quality-of-life features modernise the formula.
