US envoy Witkoff to discuss Ukraine peace proposals with Putin in St Petersburg

BBC World ·

US special envoy Steve Witkoff is due to meet Vladimir Putin in St Petersburg to discuss proposals for ending Russia’s war in Ukraine. The meeting follows talks in Oslo with Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders, who say Moscow must now respond; it comes amid strained US-Ukraine relations and continued Russian attacks.

Zelensky said US intelligence sharing on Russian missile attacks “works now”, after Kyiv had accused Washington of withholding key information. A US official called the Oslo discussions productive and said there was strong working-level alignment, while Finland’s president said progress had been made but cautioned that patience would be needed. Russia controls about 20% of Ukrainian territory, and attacks this week killed at least 12 people before a further overnight strike near Kharkiv killed two.

  • Witkoff is set to discuss Ukraine peace proposals with Putin.
  • Zelensky says US intelligence sharing now works.
  • Russian attacks continue as Moscow weighs the proposals.

Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, and the two countries remain at war. Russia controls about a fifth of Ukraine’s territory, while Russian attacks continue to cause deaths and damage.

The main figures are Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The United States and European countries are also involved in efforts to find a way to end the fighting; Steve Witkoff is the US envoy handling discussions with Moscow.

Any peace proposal would raise questions about territory, security and the terms each side might accept. The outcome matters to people in Ukraine and could affect security across Europe and relations between Russia and Western countries.
