Valheim 1.0 Is Finally The Game It Was Always Meant To Be

Polygon · 2 hours ago

After nearly six years in early access, Valheim has officially reached its 1.0 release, marking a significant milestone for one of the most influential survival games of recent years. Developer Iron Gate's Norse mythology-themed game became a breakout hit during the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2021 and has since shaped later genre entrants such as Enshrouded and Windrose, making its formal launch notable despite the game already feeling largely complete to long-time players.

According to Polygon's review, the 1.0 update does not radically overhaul Valheim but instead rounds out its late-game content, particularly the Deep North biome, with new weapons, armour, trinkets, food and building items, plus a new grappling hook for easier traversal. The core experience, its retro visual style, atmospheric soundtrack and physics-based building, remains largely unchanged from 2021 but now feels more complete from start to finish. The update coincides with Valheim's release on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2, alongside existing Windows PC and Xbox versions, all supporting cross-play.

  • Valheim exits early access with its full 1.0 update after six years.
  • Update mainly adds late-game content, including the Deep North biome and grappling hook.
  • Game also launches on PS5 and Switch 2 with cross-play support.
