Verstappen, Hamilton and Leclerc to have penalties
Max Verstappen will start the São Paulo Grand Prix from the back of the grid, while Ferrari team-mates Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc each face a 10-place drop. The penalties follow changes to engine components and could shape the race, with rain also forecast at Interlagos.
Mercedes driver George Russell has a five-place penalty after exceeding the season limit for engine parts earlier; Hamilton and Leclerc are receiving their first penalties for going beyond the four-engine allowance. Red Bull fitted Verstappen with a new engine after finding problems following Friday practice. He won last year’s São Paulo race from 17th after an engine penalty, and the circuit has extended its F1 contract through 2035.
In short
- Verstappen starts from the back in São Paulo.
- Hamilton and Leclerc each receive 10-place penalties.
- Interlagos will host F1 until 2035.
