VMAs Producer Van Toffler on Nirvana & George Michael Tributes at 2026 Awards and Why the VMAs Are Best at Their Most ‘Age, Genre & Color Blind’
The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards will honour Nirvana with the Video Vanguard Award, recognising the band’s lasting influence on MTV, music videos and subsequent artists. Producer Van Toffler said the decision reflected surprise that Nirvana had never previously received the award, as well as the band’s continuing cultural significance despite ending after Kurt Cobain’s death in 1994.
The ceremony will also feature a tribute to George Michael, who died in 2016, performed by RAYE, SOMBR and Teddy Swims. Nirvana are the first rock band to receive the Video Vanguard since Duran Duran in 2003 and the first inactive recipient since The Beatles in 1984; the awards will air on MTV and CBS on 28 September.
