Wendy’s RPG WendyQuest Offers Real Food Rewards for Beating Boss Fights
Wendy’s has launched WendyQuest, a free-to-play role-playing game that offers players a chance to win food rewards by defeating bosses. The promotion ties the game to the chain’s app as Wendy’s pursues marketing initiatives amid falling US sales.
The roughly 15-hour game launched on 4 November for Steam, Android and iOS, and features five Mech Bosses, each offering one code for a chance to win a reward. Players must make a separate qualifying purchase to redeem a reward; eligibility is limited to US residents aged 18 or over, and an app-redeemed code must be used within seven days. Wendy’s reported US systemwide sales down 7.6% and same-restaurant sales down 5.3% in its third quarter.
In short
- WendyQuest offers five chances to win food rewards.
- Rewards require a separate qualifying purchase.
- Wendy’s US sales fell in the third quarter.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
WendyQuest is a playful way for Wendy’s to attract attention and reward customers, while giving players a free game they can enjoy without having to buy anything to play. Linking optional prizes to the app may help the company compete and support its restaurants amid falling sales.
The case against
The promotion uses a lengthy game to draw people into a marketing campaign, while the food rewards require a separate qualifying purchase and have limited eligibility and redemption windows. Critics may see that as less a free reward than an incentive to spend, and question whether a fast-food brand should use gameplay to encourage purchases.
