Replica helps researchers model the Liberty Bell’s lost sound
Researchers have used a 20th-century Liberty Bell replica to model the sound the original may have made before its crack left it silent. The work offers clues to the bell’s likely acoustic qualities, although it cannot establish exactly how the historic bell sounded.
The team attached accelerometers to a replica at Penn State Behrend and tapped it to measure its vibrations, frequencies and how quickly they faded. Bell sound depends on its shape and bronze composition; the original was especially prone to cracking because its alloy was brittle. It has not been rung since an 1846 attempt to repair its crack made it worse.
