What discs can a PlayStation 5 play?

The PlayStation 5 can play PS5 and most PS4 game discs, along with Ultra HD Blu-ray, standard Blu-ray and DVD films. This makes it useful as a media player and lets owners keep using much of their existing disc collection, even as Sony plans to stop making physical copies of new games from 2028.

The console does not play PS1, PS2 or PS3 game discs, 3D Blu-rays or audio CDs; six PS4 games are also incompatible. Some finalised home-burned video discs may work, but playback is not guaranteed. Slim Digital and PS5 Pro owners can add a detachable disc drive for $79, while the original Digital Edition is not compatible with it.
