Apple has released CarPlay Ultra, an advanced version of its standard CarPlay system that extends iPhone integration across all vehicle screens rather than just the infotainment display. Whilst standard CarPlay has limitations requiring drivers to exit the interface to adjust climate control or driving modes, CarPlay Ultra integrates these vehicle controls directly, making it safer and more convenient for drivers to stay within the Apple ecosystem.

Standard CarPlay, introduced in 2014, is available in more than 800 vehicle models worldwide and allows users to access navigation, streaming and messaging apps via USB or wireless connection. CarPlay Ultra, teased by Apple in 2022, currently exists only in luxury Aston Martins within the US and Canada, requires an iPhone 12 or later, and works wirelessly only. The expansion has been slower than anticipated, with Porsche backing away from promised support, suggesting car manufacturers may be reluctant to surrender full control to Apple's systems.
