Walmart opens its shops to AI agents as Amazon blocks purchases

TechCrunch ·

Walmart is building tools that let AI agents shop on its websites, positioning itself against Amazon, which has begun blocking agents from making purchases for customers. The move matters because retailers are taking different approaches as shoppers start using AI to search for and buy products.

Walmart’s Agent Gateway will connect approved agents to its online inventory through the Model Context Protocol and support shopping at Walmart and Sam’s Club. New Agent Profiles, due next month, will let customers track each agent’s orders separately and set per-purchase approvals or spending limits; use is available to anyone with a Walmart account, without a Walmart+ membership. Walmart says its usual returns process will also apply if an agent makes an unintended purchase.

  • Walmart is opening its stores to approved AI shopping agents.
  • Customers will be able to set agent spending limits and approvals.
  • Amazon has taken the opposite approach by blocking agents.
