NVIDIA's newly announced DLSS 5 upscaling technology has sparked significant backlash from gamers and developers, who argue it functions as an "AI slop filter" that overwrites carefully crafted art direction rather than simply improving performance. Unveiled at NVIDIA's GTC conference in March, the technology marks a fundamental shift from previous DLSS versions, which used AI purely to boost frame rates without altering the underlying image. The controversy matters because it raises questions about whether a hardware company should have the power to reshape the visual identity of games it doesn't develop, and whether uniform AI processing risks making distinct titles look increasingly similar.

Unlike earlier DLSS releases, which reconstructed lower-resolution images or generated in-between frames, DLSS 5 actively repaints lighting, materials, skin and hair using a neural rendering model, which CEO Jensen Huang called "the GPT moment for graphics." Demonstrations on Resident Evil Requiem and Starfield showed characters with smoothed, glossy faces widely mocked online as "yassified," prompting the most-liked comment on NVIDIA's reveal video to outnumber the video's own likes. Publishers including Bethesda, Capcom, Ubisoft, Tencent, NetEase and Warner Bros. Games have signed up to support the tool, though Capcom reportedly did not know its game featured in the demo, and Bethesda said the effect would be optional and tuned by its art team. Artist Karla Ortiz criticised the technology as disrespectful to developers' art direction, while Huang initially dismissed critics before softening his stance.
