Why Newcastle are changing club badge
Newcastle United fans are set to vote on a new club crest, marking the first badge change since 1988. The club says the current emblem, while popular, "struggles to perform in a modern setting" because its intricate details make consistent reproduction difficult across digital platforms, broadcasting and merchandise.
The redesign was first proposed publicly in May 2025, and Newcastle have since consulted their fan advisory board and surveyed 19,500 members and season ticket holders to help shape the design options. Of those surveyed, 84% said they wanted the club to preserve its heritage rather than overhaul the crest entirely, with supporters ranking key elements such as the castle, seahorses, black-and-white shield and ribbon by importance. Eligible voters, including season ticket holders, members and those who bought tickets to two or more women's home matches last season, will choose their preferred design during a two-week window in August, though the current crest will remain in use for the 2026-27 season.
