The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS) and the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) have announced they are holding "exploratory talks" about reunifying, nearly 50 years after splitting in an acrimonious 1977 separation. A merger would matter significantly for the industry, as it could pave the way for a single, unified media rights deal covering all Emmy Awards at a time when television is undergoing major upheaval from consolidation and streaming pressures.

Los Angeles-based ATAS currently oversees the Primetime Emmys, honouring entertainment programming, while New York-based NATAS runs the Daytime, Sports, Children's & Family, News & Documentary, regional and International Emmys. The two bodies differ sharply in finances: NATAS recorded $9.8 million in revenue against $10.4 million in expenses in fiscal 2024, while ATAS took in over $53.5 million against $49 million in costs, largely thanks to the Primetime broadcast. Notably, the Primetime Emmys currently lack a confirmed broadcaster for next year, after this year's ceremony airs on NBC and Peacock hosted by Mariska Hargitay, adding urgency to the talks.
