Microsoft has acknowledged a bug in Windows 11 where virtual desktops fail to load after sign-in, leaving users with a black screen until they manually launch Windows Explorer. The problem affects devices running August 2026 and later preview updates and is particularly prevalent on Azure Virtual Desktop hosts using FSLogix technology. This issue is emblematic of a broader quality control problem that undermines Microsoft's recent promises to improve Windows reliability.

The bug impacts Windows 11 versions 26H1, 25H2, and 24H2, though Windows 10 and Server editions are unaffected. Users can temporarily work around the issue by opening Task Manager and running explorer.exe as a new task, whilst administrators can deploy a Known Issue Rollback via Group Policy as a temporary measure. Microsoft has not provided a full technical explanation, noting only that the problem appears more frequent with certain existing user profiles, and states a permanent fix will arrive in a future update. This represents one of several quality issues introduced by recent August and September updates, raising questions about the company's stated commitment to improving Windows.
