With Disney+ and Hulu’s Korean Romantic Epic ‘The Remarried Empress,’ Webtoon Entertainment Enters a New Phase in Hollywood
Webtoon Entertainment released the first four episodes of “The Remarried Empress” a day ahead of schedule on Disney+ and Hulu, responding to strong anticipation for the Korean romance series. The move signals Webtoon’s push to turn its comics and novels into English-language Hollywood productions, building on adaptations that have found audiences in South Korea and abroad.
The series, based on a Naver Webtoon, follows Empress Navier after Emperor Sovieshu falls for Rashta and seeks to marry her; Navier agrees to divorce on condition she can remarry Crown Prince Heinrey. The story has nearly 3 billion page views worldwide, and its trailer drew more than 13 million views in its first 48 hours. Webtoon is also developing an anime with Crunchyroll and has projects including “Lore Olympus” for Prime Video and “The Mafia Nanny” for Hulu in development.
In short
- “The Remarried Empress” launched a day early on Disney+ and Hulu.
- Its source story has nearly 3 billion page views worldwide.
- Webtoon is expanding into US film and television adaptations.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
Webtoon’s move into Hollywood offers a way to bring stories with established international audiences to viewers who may not read comics, while creating new opportunities for creators and the wider Korean entertainment industry. Releasing the first episodes early can meet strong audience anticipation and help build momentum for adaptations across different formats and markets.
The case against
Expanding established comics into major streaming productions may prioritise commercially proven properties over more original or less familiar stories, and adaptation can alter what made the source material resonate with readers. A sizeable online following and strong trailer views also do not by themselves show that the series will succeed with broader audiences or deliver lasting benefits to its creators.
