Former Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper Phil Parkes has died aged 79. A Wolves player for 18 years and a major figure in the club’s history, he made 382 appearances and was remembered by former team-mates as a loyal, protective and kind presence.

Parkes joined Wolves as a schoolboy in 1960, made his first-team debut in 1966 and helped the club reach the 1972 Uefa Cup final, where they lost to Tottenham on aggregate. He later played in North America for Vancouver Whitecaps and Chicago Sting, and remained involved with Wolves after retiring; he entered the club’s hall of fame in 2023 after a fall in 2025 left him under medical supervision.
