The season two finale of X-Men ’97 ends with a post-credits scene setting up a new political and mutant threat for season three. Anti-mutant figure Graydon Creed has been elected US president, while Mystique impersonates and kills X-Factor leader Valerie Cooper, signalling that the X-Men may face both renewed state hostility and the Brotherhood of Mutants.
The finale saw Apocalypse released after an attempt to stop him by killing Gambit failed, although Rogue ultimately helped imprison him in a gem; Kurt Wagner sacrificed himself in the process.
