X-Men comics debut new name for Gambit
Marvel’s Uncanny X-Men #32 gives Gambit, also known as Remy LeBeau, the new codename Wyvern after he transforms into a dragon-like creature during an alien attack. The change matters because it marks a rare departure from the name he has used since 1990 and advances a storyline in which a magical theft has left him cursed and increasingly monstrous.
The transformation stems from Gambit stealing the Left Eye of Agamotto from the dragon Sadurang in Uncanny X-Men #1; he was later told he would descend into madness, cannibalism and a monstrous form. By issue #32, he has wings, a tail and eventually an almost fully draconic appearance, prompting Rogue to seek help with him from an exorcist. This leads towards Repent, a newly teased character called the “X-orcist”, whose stated mission is to free an X-Man from a suspected homicidal possession.
- Gambit becomes dragon-like and adopts the codename Wyvern.
- The change follows a curse linked to a stolen magical artefact.
- Rogue seeks an exorcist, introducing the mysterious Repent.
