Yirenkyi completes rapid journey from Ghana to Coventry via Denmark

The Guardian · 2 hours ago

Coventry City are set to hand Caleb Yirenkyi his Premier League debut against Arsenal on Friday, after making the 20-year-old Ghana midfielder their record £26m signing. He joins from Danish side FC Nordsjælland, part of the Right to Dream (RTD) academy network, and arrives having impressed as one of the standout performers in the Superliga, drawing comparisons from Frank Lampard to N'Golo Kanté. His rapid rise underlines RTD's growing reputation as a production line for top European talent.

Yirenkyi's move was set in motion after Lampard discussed him with former Chelsea teammate Michael Essien, who coaches at Nordsjælland, with Coventry fending off rival interest following Ghana's last-32 World Cup exit. A versatile performer who has featured as a central midfielder, right-back and centre-back, he made 95th-minute headlines at this summer's World Cup with a winner against Panama, becoming only the second Ghanaian to score on his tournament debut. He also topped the Superliga's ball-recovery charts last season (205) and was named the division's young player of the year, having missed just three league games through suspension since his senior debut in February 2025.

  • Coventry sign Ghana midfielder Yirenkyi for club-record £26m fee.
  • Yirenkyi, 20, set for Premier League debut versus Arsenal on Friday.
  • Developed by Right to Dream academy via Danish club Nordsjælland.
