Red Kiss – guiding vampires through a blood-soaked cold war Berlin

The Guardian · 3 hours ago

The Guardian previews Red Kiss, an upcoming tactical narrative RPG from developer Wispfire set in a fictional 1980s cold war Berlin, in which players control vampire spies navigating a divided city. The game is notable for blending emotional, melancholic storytelling with tactical gameplay, and for its distinctive production techniques, making it a point of interest for fans of narrative-driven and vampire-themed games.

Players begin as a human resident of Berlin who, disillusioned by the conflict around them, accepts transformation into a vampire in search of power and purpose, then dispatches vampire agents across the city to gather intelligence, build faction reputation and feed, using a skillcheck system built around six character skills while managing each vampire's energy, money and blood supply. Personal missions reveal each vampire's backstory, letting players shape how those arcs resolve, and the cast is brought to life through hand-drawn portraits combined with Live2D motion-capture animation, a relatively low-cost tool more commonly used by VTubers, adapted by the team using little more than a smartphone. Wispfire, whose staff have a background in interactive theatre, says the game is told through a queer and dark lens, aiming to move beyond lighter, more upbeat depictions common in queer media.

  • Players manage vampire agents' energy, money, blood and personal backstories.
