Before becoming a successful country musician, Sturgill Simpson joined the US Navy as a teenager to escape his small Kentucky hometown and see more of the world. He served in the Combat Information Centre and travelled to Japan, later saying he would have been willing to die for the United States if necessary.

Simpson said his patriotism developed through witnessing different communities and recognising how fortunate Americans are to enjoy freedom and security. Although he described himself as a rebellious and imperfect sailor, his military experience gave him both the adventure he sought and a deeper appreciation of his country.
