Two Democratic candidates have advanced to a runoff after neither secured the majority needed to win a special election for Georgia's 13th congressional district, the seat left vacant by the death of Rep. David Scott. The seat is important because it will determine who joins the House Democratic caucus representing this Georgia district, and the contest drew attention partly because Scott's daughter was among the contenders seeking to succeed him.

The election was held on a Tuesday, and under the rules a candidate needed to secure 51% of the vote to win outright; since no one reached that threshold, the race now proceeds to a runoff between the two leading Democrats. The winner of the runoff will go on to fill the vacant seat and add another Democrat to the House of Representatives.
