Washington Commanders cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon is retiring from the NFL at the age of 31. The team confirmed the move on Tuesday, placing him on the Reserve/Retired List, and immediately signed cornerback Fabian Moreau as a replacement, ensuring minimal disruption to their defensive roster ahead of the season.

Witherspoon, who previously played for the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams, had signed a one-year, $1.41 million contract with Washington in May. According to ESPN, he practised with the team on Monday before informing coaching staff of his decision to retire the following morning, meaning he will not play a single game for the Commanders this season.
