Iran has said it will not reopen the Strait of Hormuz until the United States meets a new set of conditions, complicating negotiations over the vital shipping route. The demands could delay an agreement intended to restore commercial traffic and ease wider economic disruption, while strengthening Tehran’s leverage in talks.

Iran is seeking permanent guarantees against further US threats, an end to the war and regional military operations, the lifting of the naval blockade and sanctions, a US military withdrawal, compensation for war damage and the release of frozen Iranian assets. A 60-day negotiating period is due to end in just over a week, although it may be extended; the strait previously carried about a fifth of globally traded oil and gas.
