Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) is a major supplier of graduates to the UK's public sector, training large numbers of nurses, teachers and police officers, while also producing more than 250 start-up founders in the Liverpool City Region. It draws heavily on local and socially diverse intake, with around 60% of students from the North West and roughly 45% from the most deprived postcodes, making it a popular choice for school leavers wanting to study close to home. However, the university has ended its £500 annual bursary for students from households earning under £25,000 for the 2026-27 academic year, a change that will affect its low-income student base.

The university operates across two campuses, Mount Pleasant and City, and hosts over 1,500 degree apprentices alongside its undergraduate population. Various scholarships remain available, including the £1,000 Academic Excellence and Community Excellence Scholarships, Opportunity Scholarships for minority ethnic students, and the Vice-Chancellor's Scholarship worth up to £5,000 for five students annually. LJMU owns no student accommodation itself but has access to 3,800 partner-provided rooms, priced between £4,116 and £8,358 for a 42-week contract, and it recently backed a national campaign supporting the teaching of English, citing its £120billion annual contribution to the economy.
