Infinity Ward and co-developer Beenox have revealed a fix for one of PC gaming's most persistent annoyances, the lengthy "Compiling Shaders" wait, ahead of the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 beta this weekend. Shaders tell a graphics card how to render on-screen effects, and compiling them in advance normally causes long delays whenever a game is first launched, GPU drivers update, or major patches arrive, an issue consoles avoid due to standardised hardware. From the beta onward, Call of Duty will pre-load shaders in the background after downloading, though the benefit currently varies by platform and store.
The Battle.net launcher offers the smoothest experience, as shader pre-loading begins automatically there, whereas Steam players still face the compiling step on first launch, albeit faster, before pre-loading kicks in for future sessions. The developers say the full benefits will only arrive with the game's full release, when shaders need compiling just once rather than after every seasonal update. The beta also tackles the "Update Requires Restart" issue by cutting the number of times a restart is needed, a fix reaching PC and PlayStation 5, though Xbox will still require restarts for now and Nintendo Switch 2 gets no improvement at all.
