An Anti-Defamation League survey has found that many Jewish teachers’ union members report experiencing antisemitism, hostile rhetoric and fear of professional repercussions when raising concerns. The findings matter because unions are intended to represent and protect educators, yet respondents described self-censorship, reduced participation and dissatisfaction with union leaders’ responses.

The ADL surveyed 307 Jewish union members: 73.6% said they felt a need to censor themselves in union spaces, 70% feared reputational or professional consequences for speaking up, and 47.6% had reduced their union involvement. More than 70% said union statements on the Israel-Hamas war did not adequately condemn Hamas or the 7 October atrocities, while 69% of those who complained about antisemitism were dissatisfied with the response; the American Federation of Teachers said it was working to address the concerns.
