A volcanic eruption at Mount Anak Krakatoa has forced the suspension of hundreds of flights at Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Indonesia's main hub, after ash was detected in nearby airspace. The disruption has left tens of thousands of passengers stranded and affects both domestic and major international routes, underscoring the risks posed by Indonesia's frequent volcanic activity to global air travel.

Authorities suspended 209 flights on Sunday morning after the volcano, which began erupting late on Friday night with continuous seismic activity, lava fountains and loud booms, produced two further eruptions early on Sunday. The suspension, affecting more than 22,000 people, has been extended until 13:30 local time and mainly disrupts routes to and from Singapore, Doha, Sydney and Kuala Lumpur. Officials say there is no tsunami warning, but have advised residents nearby to stay indoors and wear masks due to respiratory, eye and skin risks. Anak Krakatoa, meaning "Child of Krakatoa", sits in the Sunda Strait and has erupted sporadically since forming in the caldera left by the catastrophic 1883 Krakatoa eruption.
