On 23 September 1952, Hank Williams recorded his final studio session at Nashville's Castle Studio, producing four songs of which three would reach the top of the country chart following his death just months later. The session is historically significant because "Your Cheatin' Heart" became a country standard, and the recordings demonstrate that despite his severe physical decline, Williams' vocal performance remained undiminished.

Williams was in catastrophic health at the time, recovering from botched back surgery whilst taking heavy doses of narcotics and drinking to manage the pain. Guitarist Chet Atkins recalled that Williams was so weak he could barely sing a few lines before collapsing into a chair between takes. Yet his voice on the recordings—"Your Cheatin' Heart," "Kaw-Liga," and "Take These Chains from My Heart"—proved strong enough to propel three of the four songs recorded that day to No. 1 on the country chart, where they appeared after his death.
