Daily Mail ·

A Gaelic football referee says he will stop officiating after he was allegedly punched by a parent during an under-12s semi-final in north Dublin. The match was abandoned shortly before its end, putting the children’s chance to play in the finals at Croke Park at risk and raising concerns about abuse of referees at youth games.

The referee, who has worked for 30 years, said the parent had shouted abuse before approaching him and striking him in the face; two teachers reportedly held the man back. Gardaí were alerted to an assault at a sporting premises in Ballymun at about 1.10pm on Tuesday, 13 October, and their investigation is ongoing. The referee described swelling and bruising, said he had withdrawn from four games that weekend, and cited other recent assaults and online threats against officials.
