Newly added reporting says Xbox is planning a handheld for next year and a tiered overhaul of Game Pass, alongside its next console, Project Helix. The console is reportedly scheduled for 2028 and could cost up to $1,800, a price that would make access to Xbox’s next generation significantly more expensive.
Fortune cites internal projections placing the console’s price between $1,200 and $1,800, unless Microsoft subsidises it. The proposed Game Pass changes would let players choose features such as cloud gaming and multiplayer, with console-only games available as add-ons. A separate report puts the production cost of memory and storage for Sony’s presumed PlayStation 6 at about $680.

Xbox is Microsoft’s video game brand, which includes consoles, games and Game Pass, a subscription service for a library of titles. Its current consoles compete with Sony’s PlayStation and Nintendo’s Switch, while cloud gaming lets people play games streamed over the internet.
Project Helix is the reported name for Xbox’s next console. Console prices depend partly on the cost of components such as memory and storage, and companies may sell hardware below cost to attract players who then buy games and subscriptions. Changes to Game Pass could affect what players pay for online play, cloud gaming and access to games.
