Former Cleveland officer guilty of gross misconduct over on-duty affair

Daily Mail ·

A former Cleveland Police officer who appeared on Channel 5’s Police Interceptors has been found guilty of gross misconduct after having a secret sexual relationship with a junior colleague while both were on duty. The hearing said his conduct included lying to senior officers and urging the colleague to conceal the relationship, raising concerns about his use of authority and professional judgement.

Acting sergeant Ben Sutcliffe served for 21 years and exchanged about 64,000 messages with the probationary constable between July 2024 and November 2025. The relationship included sex during night shifts, including a visit to the colleague’s home with his police dog, and outdoor encounters while they were off duty. Sutcliffe resigned in February; he has been barred from the College of Policing register and would have been dismissed had he remained in the force.
