Nigeria’s first Ebola patient holidayed in Uganda, officials say

BBC World ·

Nigeria has confirmed its first Ebola case since an outbreak began in East Africa in May. The patient, a 42-year-old woman and wife of a diplomat, is recovering in Abuja, and officials are tracing contacts to limit the risk of further spread.

Nigeria’s health minister said she spent two and a half weeks in Kampala before returning on 3 October, with a two-hour stop in Addis Ababa. She became ill three days after arriving home, was diagnosed on 20 October, and had 44 identified contacts, all in isolation with no reported symptoms. Uganda has disputed the account of her travel, and officials are working across countries to establish where she was infected.
