Mass Effect Universe Director Reveals Canceled Game’s Multiverse System

Polygon ·

BioWare’s cancelled Mass Effect game, Mass Effect Universe, was designed around a system that would let players explore multiple timelines shaped by their choices. Technical director Romain Toutain has revealed that the concept aimed to give players unusual freedom to create different versions of the story.

Each save file would represent its own universe, drawing on choices from the earlier trilogy and presumably Mass Effect: Andromeda. New decisions could branch into parallel timelines, even allowing choices that contradicted past ones; developers built technology to connect decisions to key plot points. Players could also share save files, while Toutain said he was not optimistic about the game returning, criticising EA for shutting projects down and retaining their licences.

In short

  • Mass Effect Universe centred on branching timelines.
  • Each save file would form its own universe.
  • Toutain is pessimistic about the game’s revival.
