Former Sydney PE teacher jailed for offences against two pupils

Daily Mail ·

A former PE teacher has been jailed for sexually offending against two students, aged 16 and 17, while she was working at a school in south-west Sydney. The judge said Brailey had abused the trust placed in teachers to protect young people, and that imprisonment was warranted.

Tayla Lee Brailey, 32, pleaded guilty to five offences, including sexual intercourse with a 17-year-old student and sexually touching a 16-year-old. The court heard she exchanged explicit messages and images with the students, had sex with the older teenager in his car during a school day, and kissed and touched the younger student in a classroom. She was sentenced to 15 months in prison and is eligible for parole in April 2027; the younger student said shame had led him to leave high school.

In short

  • A former Sydney PE teacher was jailed for offences against two students.
  • Brailey pleaded guilty to five offences involving teenagers aged 16 and 17.
  • She received 15 months and may be eligible for parole in April 2027.

Explained simply

Teachers in Australia have a duty of care to protect students, who may be under 18 and are in a position of trust with school staff. Sexual contact between a teacher and a student raises concerns about that responsibility as well as the student’s age and ability to freely consent.

The case involves two students at a school in south-west Sydney and a former physical education teacher. It matters because alleged or proven misconduct by a teacher can affect students’ wellbeing and education, and because courts consider the breach of trust when sentencing.
