Audio Technica just released its first set of wireless StreamSet headphones

Engadget ·

Audio-Technica has released the ATH-M50xSTS-WL, the first wireless model in its StreamSet range for streamers, content creators and gamers. It uses a 2.4GHz USB transceiver instead of Bluetooth to provide the low latency these users need, while expanding the range beyond wired USB and XLR models.

The headset offers around 24 hours of battery life and can be used while charging through a wired connection. It combines a flip-to-mute boom microphone based on Audio-Technica’s 20 Series with 45mm drivers from its ATH-M50x headphones, plus two levels of adaptive noise cancellation. It comes with interchangeable earpads for sound quality or breathability and costs $299.

In short

  • Audio-Technica’s first wireless StreamSet headset uses 2.4GHz.
  • Battery life is around 24 hours, with wired use while charging.
  • The ATH-M50xSTS-WL costs $299.

Explained simply

Audio-Technica is a Japanese audio equipment maker known for headphones and microphones. Its ATH-M50x headphones are a popular monitoring model, while the StreamSet range is designed for people who speak live or record content, including streamers and gamers.

Wireless headsets often use Bluetooth, which can introduce a delay between sound and video. A 2.4GHz USB connection is another way to send audio wirelessly and is commonly used where keeping that delay low matters; it also requires a compatible USB receiver.

The new model combines headphone speakers with a microphone on a boom that can be moved to mute it. Its battery life, noise cancellation and interchangeable earpads address practical needs for long sessions, while its price places it in the higher-cost part of the headset market.
