TONY IOMMI Says It’s ‘Unfair’ To Compare JORN LANDE To RONNIE JAMES DIO: ‘That’s The Sort Of Voice I Wanted’ For ‘From The Dark’ Album
Tony Iommi says it is unfair to compare Jorn Lande’s singing with that of Ronnie James Dio, despite Lande’s admiration for the late Black Sabbath and Heaven & Hell singer. Iommi chose Lande for his solo album *From The Dark* because he liked his powerful voice and wanted that style of singing for the record.
Iommi said he had first considered making an instrumental album and had sketched out four rough ideas, including acoustic pieces, but switched to recording with a band and vocalist. Released on 23 October through BMG, *From The Dark* features Lande, bassist Becky Baldwin and drummer Karl Brazil; Lande shares writing credits on every song. Iommi said he may return to the instrumental ideas later.
In short
- Iommi says Lande should not be measured against Dio.
- Lande’s powerful voice suited the sound Iommi wanted.
- *From The Dark* was released on 23 October.
Explained simply
Tony Iommi is the guitarist who co-founded Black Sabbath, a band widely associated with the development of heavy metal. Ronnie James Dio sang with Black Sabbath and later with Heaven & Hell, a group formed by Iommi and other former Sabbath members. Jorn Lande is a Norwegian rock and metal singer who has spoken of his admiration for Dio.
Iommi has also made music outside his work with Sabbath and Heaven & Hell. His album From The Dark brings him together with Lande, bassist Becky Baldwin and drummer Karl Brazil, with Lande credited as a co-writer on every song. The project follows Iommi’s earlier idea of making an instrumental record, which he may revisit in future.
