Soulframe to launch into free open beta this week, as Warframe devs go head-to-head with WoW: Forever
Soulframe, Digital Extremes’ fantasy action MMORPG, will open its Preludes testing to everyone on 6 November, ending three years of invite-only access. The launch puts it in a busy week for MMO players, arriving two days after World of Warcraft: Forever and alongside Old School RuneScape’s Hardcore worlds.
The accompanying Verse of the Veilands update reshapes how players progress across the map: after an early quest, they will purify a corrupted region to unlock resources and activities such as fishing. Players can also train a wolf companion into a mount, and try the new Ode Shrike Pact, which uses traps and explosives. The Veillands system is still being developed, with further updates planned.
In short
- Soulframe opens to all players on 6 November.
- The update adds a map-purification progression system.
- A new trap-focused Pact joins the game.
Explained simply
Soulframe is an online role-playing game from Digital Extremes, the studio behind Warframe. In this kind of game, players explore a shared fantasy world, develop a character and take on quests, often alongside other players.
Its setting and emphasis on exploration distinguish it from Warframe’s science-fiction world. Digital Extremes is opening the game to a wider audience after a period of limited testing, while continuing to build its systems and content.
Online role-playing games often compete for players’ time, so Soulframe’s arrival matters to fans deciding which worlds to try. Its progress may also show how the studio’s experience with Warframe carries over to a different genre and setting.
