Democrats poised to sweep Florida congressional districts redrawn by Republicans
Democrats won three of four Florida congressional seats that Republicans redrew to favour their candidates, with a Democrat narrowly leading in the fourth. The results, alongside Democratic victories in other states, suggest the party performed strongly in districts reshaped during a nationwide mid-decade redistricting effort.
Florida’s governor Ron DeSantis and the Republican-controlled legislature created four districts that Donald Trump would have won by double-digit margins in 2024, except for one he would have carried by about nine points. Kathy Castor, Pia Dandiya and Jared Moskowitz were projected to win three seats, while Darren Soto led in the fourth. Analysts cautioned that the Republican maps could still yield gains in a more neutral political climate; statewide, Florida’s Senate and governor’s races were much closer than many had expected.
In short
- Democrats won three of four redrawn Florida seats.
- Darren Soto narrowly led in the remaining district.
- Republican maps may still bring gains in a neutral year.
