It’s the ‘rocket ship’ adored by the super-rich. But now fiery Florida crash puts the tragic ‘accidents’ lurking behind Learjet’s glamour in the spotlight…
A Learjet 60 crashed in Greenacres, Florida, on 1 November, killing all nine people on board and prompting renewed scrutiny of the aircraft’s safety reputation. The Bahamas-bound jet came down in a residential area and burst into flames; about 600 people were evacuated from a nearby mobile home community.
Aviation author Gary D Park said the Learjet’s speed and power do not mean it has a poor safety record, which he says has improved over time. Pilot and aviation attorney Mike Slack, however, described the Learjet 60 as especially difficult to recover from a stall. The US National Transportation Safety Board is investigating, and manufacturer Bombardier said it would support the inquiry and could not comment on the cause until it is complete.
In short
- A Learjet 60 crash in Florida killed all nine people on board.
- Around 600 residents were evacuated from a nearby community.
- Investigators are examining the cause amid debate over the jet’s safety.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
The Learjet’s speed and power are not, by themselves, evidence of an unsafe aircraft, and its safety record has improved over time, aviation author Gary D Park argues. On this view, the Florida crash is a grave event that warrants investigation, but conclusions about the aircraft’s overall safety should wait for evidence from the inquiry and broader experience across its service life.
The case against
The crash has renewed legitimate concern about whether the Learjet 60’s handling characteristics pose particular risks: pilot and aviation attorney Mike Slack says it can be especially difficult to recover from a stall. From this perspective, the aircraft’s safety record over time does not settle questions about specific hazards, and scrutiny is warranted while investigators establish what happened.
