HSA-eligible health plans in 2027: What to know about tax savings vs. higher deductibles
HSA-eligible health plans can offer tax savings and lower premiums, but they generally require members to pay more out of pocket before insurance covers care. The trade-off matters as more employers offer these plans, making it important for workers to weigh potential savings against the cost of needing treatment.
For 2027, an eligible plan must have a deductible of at least $1,750 for individual cover or $3,500 for family cover; annual out-of-pocket costs, excluding premiums, are capped at $8,700 and $17,400 respectively. A Marsh survey found 63% of US health plan sponsors with at least 50 employees offer an eligible plan, and 37% of employees with employer coverage are enrolled in one. An Aon executive said the plans can cost employers and employees less overall because of their higher deductibles and cost-sharing structure.
In short
- HSA plans may mean lower premiums and tax savings.
- Higher deductibles can increase costs when care is needed.
- In 2027, individual deductibles must be at least $1,750.
