Blizzard Reveals What Made It Finally Pull The Trigger on WoW Forever
Blizzard says the community’s response to Season of Discovery helped persuade it to develop World of Warcraft Forever, a permanent version of the game’s Classic mode with new changes. The project had been discussed before Classic launched in 2019, but was set aside while the team focused on a straightforward version of the original game.
Season of Discovery arrived in 2023 with experimental features, including ability gems and turning the five-player Blackfathom Deeps dungeon into a raid. Senior game designer Josh Greenfield told Bloomberg that its reception prompted discussions about a permanent version; a graphics-engine demo at Northshire Abbey then helped win support inside Blizzard. Forever has launched to strong player interest, with about 200 terabytes of memory dedicated to keeping its servers running smoothly.
In short
- Season of Discovery’s reception helped bring Forever to life.
- A Northshire Abbey demo helped secure Blizzard’s support.
- Blizzard dedicated about 200TB of memory to launch servers.
