Houndmouth’s Matt Myers No Longer Has to Be Sad to Write Great Songs
Matt Myers says the stability and acceptance he has found in family life have changed how he writes songs for Houndmouth. His experience underpins the band’s new album, *Lordy*, and challenges the idea that songwriting requires unhappiness: he now feels able to write simply, edit, and let a song take shape without overthinking it.
Myers, 38, lives in New Albany, Indiana, where he helped form Houndmouth in 2011 after playing cover-band gigs. The band’s 2015 album *Little Neon Limelight*, featuring “Sedona” and “Darlin’”, brought national attention; later songs include “McKenzie” and “Miracle Mile” from 2021’s *Good for You*. Myers has two young daughters from his first marriage and married again two years ago; *Lordy* is released during Dualtone Records’ 25th anniversary year.
In short
- Family life has brought Myers greater balance.
