Lola Cars, the storied British constructor rebuilding itself after a 2022 bankruptcy, is producing a fresh run of 16 continuation examples of its 1965 T70S sports racer, and what makes them notable is not the retro styling but the sustainable materials used to build them. Executive innovation director Matt Faulks told Ars Technica that the project shows historic racing can drive genuine technological development, cutting the car's cradle-to-gate carbon footprint by 54 per cent compared with one built from traditional materials, to around 4.6 tonnes of CO2e.
Rather than using conventionally smelted magnesium, Lola extracts it from seawater via solar-powered electrolysis, avoiding damaging shielding gases. The 1960s fibreglass bodywork is replaced by a bespoke composite of basalt outer layers, flax inner layers and a sugarcane-derived PFA resin, which outperforms fibreglass in strength and stiffness though it is not used structurally. The cars will be offered either as FIA-homologated T70S racers or as a UK road-legal T70S GT, the latter powered by a modern GM 6.2-litre V8 and styled to hide its necessary digital components behind an analogue aesthetic.
