Noga Erez Turns Turmoil Into Art

Rolling Stone · 3 hours ago

The documentary "Noga" follows Israeli musician Noga Erez and her partner Ori Rousso across three turbulent years, capturing how the couple's rise to international stardom collided with the outbreak of war in Gaza after the 7 October 2023 Hamas attacks. Directed by Austrian filmmakers Benji and Jono Bergmann, who began filming in 2021 before the conflict began, the film has become an unexpectedly urgent portrait of an artist navigating fame, backlash and violent online abuse amid a climate of cultural boycotts and polarised politics.

The film, which premiered at the Tribeca Festival last month and is now touring festivals, mixes intimate domestic footage with concert scenes and shows Erez receiving torrents of hostile messages, including antisemitic threats, as she and Rousso travel to shows. Erez, compared to artists such as Björk and Doechii and endorsed by figures including Billie Eilish and Robbie Williams, has previously opened for Florence and the Machine and Pink. Rather than framing itself as an overtly political statement, the documentary instead centres on the emotional toll of war on Erez and Rousso's creative and romantic partnership.
