High humidity is more than a nuisance, the outlet notes, as it can hinder the body's ability to cool down in hot weather, strain air conditioning systems, worsen cardiac issues, and promote mould growth that affects asthma sufferers and damp-prone spaces such as basements and bathrooms.

WIRED's reviewers tested numerous models to select top picks across categories, with the Midea 20 Pint Cube Dehumidifier ($183) named best overall for its balance of capacity, quiet operation and compact, stackable design. Other recommendations include the Breezome 60 Oz. for bathrooms, the Dreo Smart Dehumidifier 711S for basements, and the compact Eva-Dry Renewable Mini E-333 for travel. The August 2026 update added the Aeocky Rhea-001 as an honourable mention, tested a newer Midea 50-pint model that is no longer recommended due to a faulty humidity sensor, and noted that Honeywell Air Management has ceased operating.
