A puppy found abandoned in a cage at an Ohio highway rest stop has been adopted by a sheriff's deputy, who named him "Trooper" in honour of the state trooper who rescued him. Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper John Kronander discovered the dog during a routine check of a parking area on the I-71 in Medina County on 23 August, with body camera footage capturing the moment he found the animal caged with no food or water. The case has drawn widespread attention online and highlights ongoing concerns about animal abandonment, which is a criminal offence in Ohio.

Kronander gave the puppy water before handing him over to the Medina County Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, where he made a full recovery and was initially named Miles. He was later adopted by Deputy Matthew Denton, a close friend of Kronander's, who renamed him Trooper at the public's suggestion after news coverage of the rescue. The Medina County SPCA condemned the abandonment as "heartbreaking" and "completely unacceptable", while footage of the rescue has amassed over 82,000 reactions and nearly two million views on social media, with Denton reporting that Trooper has settled well into his new home alongside the family's other dogs.
