An officially licensed Knightmare game, based on the British TV show, is coming next year

Eurogamer ·

An officially licensed, free point-and-click game based on the ITV children’s show Knightmare is in development for PC, with a release planned for next year. The launch will mark 40 years since the show began, bringing its hand-painted fantasy dungeons and original cast back in game form.

Writer and designer Ewen Watson is leading the project, which has the blessing of creator Tim Child. Returning actors include Hugo Myatt as Treguard and Mark Knight as Lord Fear; the game drops the original life-force meter to give players more time to explore. Watson expects the adventure to take a couple of hours, and there are currently no plans for a console release.

In short

  • Knightmare is returning as a free PC adventure next year.
  • Original cast members, including Treguard’s actor, are returning.
  • The short game drops the show’s life-force meter.

Explained simply

Knightmare was an ITV children’s fantasy game show that began in 1987. A blindfolded contestant explored a dungeon shown on screen, guided through hazards and puzzles by teammates watching in the studio.

The show’s guide, Treguard, was played by Hugo Myatt, while Mark Knight played the villain Lord Fear. Its hand-painted settings and mix of fantasy adventure and studio teamwork made it distinctive among children’s television programmes.

The new game draws on that setting and cast, with creator Tim Child’s blessing. Its planned 40th-anniversary timing connects it to the show’s beginnings, while its longer exploration reflects a change from the television format’s time pressure.
