More than 30,000 people who arrived in Australia by boat during the 2009–14 period have reportedly been granted permanent Resolution of Status visas, a total well above the 19,000 initially forecast. The figures, reported by *The Australian*, have prompted opposition claims that the grants undermine border security and weaken the policy of preventing unauthorised boat arrivals from settling permanently.

Most recipients had previously held Temporary Protection or Safe Haven Enterprise visas, and more than half of the grants were reportedly made in the programme’s first 18 months. About 17,000 recipients have become Australian citizens or are eligible to do so; grants to the cohort rose by 22 per cent in the 2026 financial year. The Home Affairs Department says applicants must meet health, character and security requirements, while the government says its border policies remain unchanged and notes that grants also cover people affected by recent humanitarian crises.
