Apple begins rolling out selected AI tools in China with iOS 27.3
Apple says Apple Intelligence will begin arriving in China in the iOS 27.3 beta, making a selection of its AI tools available in a market where the service had not yet launched. The move expands Apple’s AI offering there, although the new Siri AI is not included.
The beta is due on 4 November, with the full iOS 27.3 release scheduled for December. Available features are expected to include notification summaries, live translation, writing and proofreading tools, visual intelligence and photo object removal. Apple has also worked with Alibaba to support its Qwen chatbot in some experiences; the tools were approved in China in July, and Reuters reported in August that Apple had trained a language model specifically for the country.
In short
- Apple Intelligence is coming to China with iOS 27.3.
- The beta is scheduled for 4 November.
- The launch excludes the new Siri AI.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
Bringing selected Apple Intelligence tools to China gives users access to translation, writing and photo features that may be useful in everyday life, and lets Apple offer more of the same capabilities available elsewhere. Working with locally approved technology may also help the company meet Chinese requirements and make the service viable in a major market.
The case against
A limited launch without the new Siri may leave users with a narrower experience than Apple Intelligence users elsewhere, while the partnership and country-specific model raise questions about how much control Apple retains over the service. Some may also worry that adapting AI tools to local approval requirements could affect what information or responses users can access.
Explained simply
Apple Intelligence is Apple’s collection of AI features built into its devices. It can help with tasks such as summarising notifications, translating conversations, editing writing and changing photos. Apple has not previously made the service available in China.
Apple is introducing some of these tools there with help from Alibaba, a Chinese technology company whose Qwen chatbot will support some experiences. China’s rules require approval for AI services, and the tools received approval in July. The new Siri AI is not part of this release.
The move expands Apple’s AI offering in a major market, while showing how its services there involve local technology partners and regulatory approval. Apple has also reportedly developed a language model tailored to China.
